If you didn’t already know, I truly enjoy giving gifts. There’s nothing like the feeling of finding the perfect present for someone you care about. To me, it’s an art form — one I’ve almost mastered. But every now and then, the universe throws me a challenge, and this past spring was no exception.
A Milestone Birthday… and a Blank Mind
A friend of mine was turning the big 5-0, and I wanted something special to honor her new season of life. The only problem? We had only known each other for about a year and a half. I thought I knew enough to pick the perfect gift, but apparently, I was very wrong.
Searching for Inspiration (and Striking Out)
Pinterest to the Rescue… or Not
After racking my brain for what felt like an eternity, I turned to Pinterest. But nothing grabbed my attention — not a single thing.
My Go-To Gift Websites Failed Me
Next, I visited one of my favorite sites, Gifts.com, which usually helps you narrow gift ideas by category. But I struck out there, too. No inspiration. No spark. Nothing.
With only two weeks left before her birthday, I was at my wit’s end. I decided to give my brain a little break.
The Eureka Moment
A few days later, I sat down and reflected on everything I knew about my friend. I replayed every conversation in my head until it hit me:
She LOVES to travel.
She takes several trips a year, always plans ahead, and even had an upcoming European adventure to celebrate turning 50.
A travel theme was clearly the way to go.
Let the Gift Hunt Begin
A Travel Coffee Table Book
I headed straight to Amazon, the land of endless possibilities, to search for travel-themed gifts. My first idea was a beautiful coffee table book so she could discover new places to explore. I chose Best in Travel 2025 because it was current, colorful, and full of unique destinations.
A Travel Photo Album
My next idea: a travel scrapbook. But since my friend isn’t big on crafting, I went with a simple, stylish photo album. It held 160 photos and included lines for captions — perfect for preserving memories without any fuss.
A Travel Journal
Because she enjoys writing, I added a linen-covered travel journal with prompts and space for photos. It was compact enough to slip into her bag for on-the-go storytelling.
Rounding Out the Perfect Gift Bundle
Setting the Mood: A Candle Warmer
Even though the travel items made a lovely gift, I wanted something to add warmth and ambiance. That’s when I thought of a candle warmer. I pictured her turning on the soft glow while she flipped through the travel book. I added a lavender candle with the phrase “The calming scent of planning another trip” embossed on the glass. Perfect.
The Final Touch: A Travel Backpack
Instead of a standard gift bag, I decided to purchase a stylish travel backpack to hold everything. It felt on theme and practical — cute enough for weekend trips and spacious enough for a 17” laptop, three packing cubes, and more. The black and cream design sealed the deal.
I added everything to my cart and felt completely satisfied with my selections.
Delivery Day: A Gift from the Heart
My order arrived two days before her birthday. I arranged each item carefully inside the backpack and then made a personalized card with a little help from ChatGPT, of course.
When I surprised her with the gift, she burst into tears. Her birthday had started off shaky because she’d unexpectedly had to cancel her European trip. She was devastated, but my gift became a bright spot in her day.
I couldn’t have been happier.
The Joy of Giving
There is nothing like making someone’s day with a thoughtful, intentional gift. Her joy reminded me why I love gift-giving so much: it’s not about the price tag — it’s about the heart, the creativity, and the intention behind it.
I’m always looking for unique gift ideas and these shabby chic DIY egg carton gift boxes didn’t disappoint. They make the perfect Spring gift for both children and adults alike. Plus, they can hold anything from food to small trinkets. You can’t ask for anything more in a gift.
My Inspiration
I first saw this idea on Pinterest of course. The idea was posted on the Momtasic website. In her post, she provided a detailed description of how she created these boxes as gifts for various Spring events. Her boxes were beautifully painted in bright colors and accented with large flowers. She also placed donut holes in each slot and gave them away to family and friends.
How I Created The Gift Boxes
After I finished reading her post, I was completely sold on the idea of making these DIY egg carton gift boxes. I then eagerly proceeded to look at all of the examples of these boxes on Pinterest that I could find. There were so many ways to design these boxes. The possibilities were endless.
A month after I made this discovery, I set out to make these gift boxes for my nieces Noelle and Ayla. I had to create my boxes on a strict budget. Therefore, I had to find cheap supplies from various sources. Fortunately, everything was on sale for Easter at many of the stores. So, I was able to purchase everything at a good price.
My Creative Process
I originally wanted to buy the egg cartons already painted and ready to go at Hobby Lobby. Unfortunately, I got there too late. They were sold out in the stores and online. Which meant I needed to purchase the egg cartons at the grocery store and paint them myself. In the end, I bought two six-count egg cartons from the store and painted them using pastel colored acrylic paint.
I purchased most of my supplies from Hobby Lobby. I kept it simple since I was on a budget. The candy and Easter basket grass were bought at the dollar store. You can view my supply list below.
Supply List
2 six-count cardboard egg cartons
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes
2 sheets of scrapbook paper
glue
Easter basket grass
Candy
Stickers
I painted one carton blue and the other purple. I used two coats of paint on each carton. It took approximately 45 minutes for the paint to completely dry. I made sure I painted both the inside and outside of each carton.
While I waited for the paint to dry, I cut out the scrapbook paper to fit the tops and insides of the carton. I used the original sticker that came with the carton as a template to create the outside cover.
After the paint was dry, I affixed the decorative scrapbook paper onto the outside and inside of the cartons. I then decorated each box with the corresponding stickers.
Finally, I cut and placed the Easter grass in each compartment and added the candy to each cubby. In my opinion, the finished products turned out very well.
The girls absolutely loved their gifts and the candy inside. I’m glad that I was able to make these and put a smile on their faces.
What are some gift ideas you have for the Spring? Tell me about them in the comments below.
I absolutely love giving gifts. There is no better feeling than knowing that you have purchased the best gift for your friend or loved one. That moment when you see the look of sheer joy on their face when they first look upon their gift is PRICELESS. That’s why I get a rush from coming up with the best gift ideas.
I want everyone to have that feeling when giving gifts. Therefore, in this post, I have listed some great tips and tricks for coming up with the best gift ideas for the special people in your life. These tips should help anyone who gets stumped when it comes to gift-giving.
So, let’s get started.
GIVE FROM THE HEART
Image by Ben Kerckx from Pixabay
This is the first tip because it’s the most important. You never want to give a gift grudgingly or out of obligation. You should want to give it freely. Otherwise, what’s the point.
The recipient should feel like you WANTED to make their day. Therefore, if you give from the heart, you can never go wrong.
IT’S TRULY THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS
As children, we are often told that people will love any gift we give because “it’s the thought that counts.” For the most part, that’s true. However, many people misinterpret and abuse this rationale to justify giving a lazy or crappy gift. The idea is that the recipient should be grateful that the person giving them the gift thought enough about them to buy a gift in the first place.
Unfortunately, this way of thinking will only lead to disappointment for both parties. The result will be a gift that is re-gifted or tossed in the trash, and nobody wants that to happen.
Image by House Of Legacy from Pixabay
So, let’s reclaim this saying for its true meaning, which is that we put some real thought behind what we want to give to the recipient. That we make a real concerted effort to think about the person’s likes, wants, and desires to come up with a gift that is just right for them. We need to say NO to lazy gift giving from now on. I cannot emphasize the importance of this tip enough because trust me when I say that a person can always tell if you put some thought into buying their gift or not.
LISTEN UP AND PAY ATTENTION
If the gift recipient is a friend or loved one, chances are they have said things or dropped hints in the casual conversations you have had throughout the year. Many times, they are not aware that they have said anything at all. However, if you are a good active listener, you can pick up on these messages and gleam the best gift idea for when the time comes. You’d be surprised by how a person’s wants and needs come up in conversation, which can be easily be turned into a great gift idea.
Also, pay attention to what’s going on in the person’s life. Events might be happening at work or home that may give you some great ideas. For these reasons, you should listen up and listen well. You will be able to come up with an idea with ease if you just pay attention.
MAKE A LIST
Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
I have to be honest; I love making lists. However, when it comes to giving gifts, I think creating a running list is a great way to keep up with your ideas throughout the year. You can also generate lists for different occasions (birthdays, holidays, or other special occasions).
Your list can be written on paper, typed in your phone, or saved on your computer. The point is that a list is a good way to keep track of your ideas. You can check gifts off as you go. Plus, having a list means you rarely run out of gift ideas.
COLLECT STUFF YEAR ROUND
There is no hard-fast rule stating that you can only purchase a gift when the time comes or when the occasion arises. You can buy gifts at any time of the year if it’s in your budget. For example, you may see something that would make a good gift during your travels or while browsing online that you may never see again. If you pass it by, you may miss your opportunity to purchase the item. If that’s the case, it’s okay to buy a gift when you see it and save it for later. That way, you will be ready when it’s time to give the gift.
Additionally, I know people who like to buy gifts and keep them on hand all year just in case a special occasion pops up or they have an unexpected visitor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with stockpiling gifts and saving them for later. It’s actually a brilliant idea.

Plus, purchasing gifts ahead of time will allow you to miss the crowds and the holiday rush. I mean, who wants to be out there in that mess when you can sit back and relax while everyone else is out there participating in the madness.
SEARCH THE INTERNET
Did you know that there are websites whose sole purpose is to make gift suggestions? When I discovered these sites many years ago, I was on cloud nine. They took the guesswork out of finding the perfect gift. There is no shame in using any of these websites. Whether you are stumped or already have a list of ideas, these websites are a great resource.
All you need to do is conduct an online search for gift ideas (you can also be more specific and type in gifts for her or him), and a ton of results will pop up. Some results will be articles listing the best gift ideas for the current year. Other results may be gift websites (like www.gifts.com) that are dedicated to suggesting gift ideas exclusively. You can even purchase the items directly from the website.
Finally, you can search through Pinterest, one of my favorite places on the internet, for some great gift ideas. I can’t begin to tell you how Pinterest is one of the best resources for a wide range of gift ideas. Pinterest can be used as a search engine to find almost anything under the sun. So, check out the Pinterest app for a plethora of gift ideas. I promise you won’t regret it.
GIVE THE GIFT OF AN EXPERIENCE
A gift isn’t always about physically handing someone a box with an item inside. Sometimes, the gift can be an experience. For example, I purchased two tickets for my mother and aunt to participate in a necklace making class at a local bead shop. Not only did they learn how to make a beaded necklace, but they were also able to spend time with one another. It was money well spent.
Experience gifts such as classes, concerts, a museum tour, race car driving, or a hot air balloon ride are all wonderful ideas to give as gifts. So, consider giving the gift of an experience they won’t forget as your next gift idea.
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE PRICE
Image by Harry Strauss from Pixabay
We all need to keep in mind that the most expensive gift isn’t necessarily the best gift. It’s not always about the price of the gift, but the thought behind the gift. However, I think we sometimes forget the best gifts may be cheap or free.
Therefore, we all need to take a beat to think about why we are giving a gift. Are we giving the gift because of our ego? Are we giving the gift because the price tag will impress the recipient? Is the recipient the kind of person that cares about the price of a gift? These are all factors we need to take into consideration when we buy a gift. So, take the time to decide if purchasing a pricey or showy gift is the best option for your friend or loved one. There is no need to break the bank if you don’t have to.
Remember, the gift of time is always free.
PRACTICAL GIFTS ARE GREAT TOO (JUST BE CAREFUL)
Gifts that you know someone may need in their daily life can be good presents if you know they will appreciate them and not be disappointed. For example, I was a teacher for many years, and during that time, I received a lot of gifts. One year, a parent presented me with a crate of eggs. Okay, I know the average person may be shocked to receive such a gift. I have to admit that it was unique. I had never been given anything like it as a present. However, those eggs turned out to be quite useful, and I loved them. Especially since it was the holiday season, and I had a lot of baking to do. Those eggs came in handy. The next year, the same parent gave me a bottle of olive oil and Tide laundry pods. I was thrilled to receive them as gifts too because they were extremely useful and wouldn’t go to waste.
Now, I’m not saying that eggs or laundry detergent are ideal gifts for everyone. Still, sometimes practical gifts can really go a long way if you have put some thought into it and your heart is in the right place. However, I strongly advise that you proceed with caution. You don’t want to give someone a practical gift when they are expecting something more unique and personalized.
PURCHASE PERSONAL GIFTS WITH EXTREME CARE
Image by Kerstin Riemer from Pixabay
Personal gifts, such as clothing or perfume, can be tricky. These gifts work best if you know the recipient’s unique style or scent. Using your scent or style won’t work because everyone has different tastes. Unless you know the person extremely well or they have told you specifically what to buy, I would steer clear of buying these items as presents. Things such as scarves, gloves, hats, and candles are fine, but an entire outfit or an expensive bottle of fragrance may be too much of a risk if you don’t know what they like.
10 TIPS FOR GIFT GIVING RECAP:
Give from the heart.
It’s truly the thought that counts.
Listen up and pay attention.
Make a list.
Collect stuff year-round.
Search the internet.
Give the gift of an experience.
It’s not all about the price.
Practical gifts are great too.
Just be careful. Purchase personal gifts with extreme care.
For my niece Noelle’s second birthday, I wanted to give her a stylish box to hold her hair accessories. The idea came to me when I noticed that she didn’t have a special place to keep all of her barrettes and bows for her hair. Once I locked onto the idea, I was able to run with it and make it happen with the help of my mother.
My Thought Process
Now, I know you can store hair accessories in any plain old box, but I wanted the one that I gave Noelle to be pretty as well as functional. A keepsake so to speak. Something she would cherish for a few years. Therefore, I started searching things like cute feminine tool boxes or make-up storage kits. There were a variety of options to choose from, but I needed to make sure I chose something that was fit for a little girl to handle.
The Search Was On
After searching for an hour, I finally landed on the old school Caboodle case. As soon as I looked at it, I knew it would be a perfect storage box for Noelle. It was cute, colorful, easy to carry, and easy to open. It also had an auto-open tray with a flip-lid and mirror, storage on the bottom, and a secure latch. The only thing I needed to do was was pick a color and purchase the case.
Road Trip
Instead of buying it online, I chose to find a store nearby that sold the Caboodle. Fortunately, the Ulta near our house sold it in their store (Oh Happy Day). So, the next day, my mother and I quickly hopped in the car and drove to Ulta. I was delighted to see the Caboodle case there in a variety of colors. I chose the teal and lavender option for Noelle’s gift. It didn’t cost no more than $20. So, I was well within our budget with money to spare.
Our next two stops were the dollar store and a different beauty supply store. We chose not to buy accessories at Ulta because we needed to purchase additional components to put in the case at an affordable price. Thankfully, we were able to find some adorable hair items and sunglasses at both stores to add to her new Caboodle case.
When we returned home we removed all of the items from their bags and started placing them into the case. It was truly exciting to see it all come together. Everything fit inside the case wonderfully.
The Result
After the Caboodle was assembled, we placed the entire case inside of the clear decorative gift bag that we purchased at Target and tied it with fancy ribbons. We couldn’t wait to present it to Noelle on her birthday the next day.
The day of Noelle’s birthday celebration, we presented her with our gift and she absolutely loved it. Even though she was only two, she knew exactly what it was and immediately starting looking at all of her new hair items. Plus, I think she was tickled pink that she had her own hair box that she didn’t have to share with her older sister.
I’m so happy that I came up with this cool gift idea. It was a great purchase and I know my niece still uses and cherishes it till this very day.

In honor of Galentine’s Day and Black History month, I decided to draw the little girl depicted in the short film Hair Love as a gift for my nieces. I was originally inspired by a lovely drawing done by the doodle artist Diane Bleck on Instagram. The moment I saw her picture, I knew I had to recreate it for Noelle and Ayla.
What Is Hair Love?
The short film Hair Love, written by Matthew A. Cherry, is a sweet story of how a father attempts to style his daughter’s hair for the first time. Initially, he struggles to style her hair and is at a lost. Then, he watches a video and successfully molds it into a beautiful style. It’s a lovely bonding moment between the father/daughter duo.
This short black film won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film on February 9, 2020. A first for an animation directed and produced by two African Americans.
How I Created My Drawing?
To make my version of Diane’s original drawing, I had to dust off some of my art supplies that had been sitting in storage for a while. I chose to draw it on sketch paper with a no. 2 pencil, outline it with a fine tipped pen, and fill it in with colored pencils.
I also attempted to make my drawing different from the original by giving each child different facial expressions, skin tones, and clothing. Additionally, I added a variety of hair tools to fill out the extra spaces on the paper.
The Final Result
I think the final result was absolutely adorable. Even though I am an amateur artist, I feel my drawing does a good job of representing the essence and spirit of this wonderful film.
My nieces and their mother were thrilled to receive it in the mail along with the other Galentine’s Day gifts. They were so impressed that they actually framed it in order to place it on the art gallery wall in their office area.
The Look On Her Face Is Priceless
I’m thrilled that I was able to create another piece of artwork that represents my nieces and is unique. Hopefully, they will cherish it for many years to come.
Hot chocolate bombs (aka hot cocoa bombs) are the latest treats to go viral on the internet. I first saw an article written about them back in December and was completely in awe from the moment I laid my eyes on them. They had recently become popular and were sold out everywhere. I made it my business to find out all that I could about the bombs. I also looked up a quick and easy hot chocolate bombs recipe so that I could make them myself.
What Are Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Hot chocolate bombs are spheres of pure chocolate joy. They are generally filled with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows. They also come in a variety of flavors ranging from your basic milk chocolate mix to raspberry.
How Do They Work?
It’s simple really. You just place the chocolate bomb into a large cup or mug and add hot milk. The bomb then melts (explodes), releasing it’s tasty contents. After that, just stir and enjoy.
My Hot Chocolate Bomb Making Adventure
After I read the article about the popularity of the bombs, I immediately went to to YouTube to find out more about these cool novelty items. Of course, I found a bunch of videos on how to make and enjoy them at home if you couldn’t find them in the store. I obviously was late to this trend because some of these videos were several months old.
Watching the tutorials inspired me to make these delightful goodies. However, I didn’t want to make them for myself. I wanted to share them with others, but I couldn’t figure out with who.
Over a month later, I continued to come across videos about the hot chocolate bombs. I just couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that I was suppose to create them myself. That’s when I decided I was definitely going to try my hand at making them.
Once the decision was made, a light bulb went off in my head. I could give them to my darling nieces as Galentine’s Day gifts. They were the perfect gifts for kids. Especially, during the cold winter months.
Now that I had finally made up my mind, I reviewed a few more videos and wrote up my grocery list. I already had a silicone mold at home so that was one item I didn’t have to worry about. I just needed to purchase the ingredients and a cupcake box.
Ingredients/Supply List
Here is what I bought to create the bombs.
2 bags of Ghiradelli melting wafers (I bought white and dark chocolate)
1 bottle of Sprinkles
1 pack of Cupcake liners
3 – 4 Land O’ Lakes hot cocoa mix packets (in a variety of flavors) – You can use any hot chocolate mix. This brand is the one that I prefer.
1 bag of Miniature marshmallows
1 Silicone mold
1 pack of Cupcake containers
1 box for shipping (optional)
How Do You Make Them?
Creating the bombs turned out to be pretty simple. The videos I watched provided all of the information I needed to successfully make the hot chocolate bombs.
Take a look at the hot chocolate bombs recipe below.
2 bagsbags of Ghiradelli melting wafers (- (I bought white and dark chocolate))
1 bottleSprinkles
1packCupcake liners
3-4packetsLand O' Lakes hot cocoa mix packets (in a variety of flavors) (– You can use any hot chocolate mix. This brand is the one that I prefer.)
1bagMiniature marshmallows
Instructions
Melt the candy melts according to the instructions on the package. I melted mine in the microwave on 50% power for 30 second intervals.
Add about about two teaspoons of melted chocolate to each mold. Use a spoon to spread the chocolate evenly around the bottom and sides of the mold.
Place the mold to chill in the refrigerator for about 5 to 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
Remove the mold from the refrigerator, add another thin layer of chocolate. Be sure there are no gaps or empty spaces. Place it back in the refrigerator for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
Remove the mold from the refrigerator. Gently release the shells from the mold and place them on a piece of wax paper or a cookie sheet.
Fill the bottom half of each bomb with hot cocoa mix (2 tbsp.) and marshmallows.
Warm a plate or pan.
Take the top half of the sphere and place it on the plate until you see it starting to melt.
Quickly place it on top of the bottom half to seal your sphere.
Once they are sealed, place them back in the refrigerator for a few minutes to ensure they have hardened and set.
Finally, take them out and decorate them with melted drizzle, sprinkles, or any way you desire.
I made eight hot cocoa bombs in total. Six of them were heading to my nieces in Minnesota and two were staying here for my mother and I to try.
I carefully wrapped each bomb individually in treat bags, placed them in cupcake liners, and arranged them in the cupcake container. I then lined the top of the container with a piece of bubble wrap for extra cushion.
The box of bombs was then placed in the shipping box with a few other items. I also included a letter with directions on how to use the hot chocolate bombs to make a delicious cup of hot cocoa. The box was then lined with additional bubble wrap and padding to ensure they would get there intact.
The Verdict
My mother and I both said a prayer over the box and sent them off to my nieces. While we waited several days for the package to arrive to their destination, we tried the remaining cocoa bombs to see if they were worth all of the hype. I’m happy to report that they are ABOSULUTELY WORTH THE HYPE! They are the best warm and fuzzy sweet treat on a cold winter night. They are comforting and truly hit the spot.
I’m happy to report that the hot chocolate bombs arrived in Minnesota safe and sound. My nieces were thrilled to receive their Galentine’s Day gifts and were even more excited to try the bombs. Needless to say, the cocoa bombs were a hit.
I’m so happy I tried something new and was able to share them with others. I’m glad that I was able to bring a little joy to my nieces while they are stuck in the house during this pandemic.
If you are looking for a unique gift to give to your loved ones, this is a good one to try.
