For my niece Noelle’s second birthday, I wanted to give her a stylish box to hold her hair accessories. The idea came to me when I noticed that she didn’t have a special place to keep all of her barrettes and bows for her hair. Once I locked onto the idea, I was able to run with it and make it happen with the help of my mother.

My Thought Process

Now, I know you can store hair accessories in any plain old box, but I wanted the one that I gave Noelle to be pretty as well as functional. A keepsake so to speak. Something she would cherish for a few years. Therefore, I started searching things like cute feminine tool boxes or make-up storage kits. There were a variety of options to choose from, but I needed to make sure I chose something that was fit for a little girl to handle.

The Search Was On

After searching for an hour, I finally landed on the old school Caboodle case. As soon as I looked at it, I knew it would be a perfect storage box for Noelle. It was cute, colorful, easy to carry, and easy to open. It also had an auto-open tray with a flip-lid and mirror, storage on the bottom, and a secure latch. The only thing I needed to do was was pick a color and purchase the case.

Road Trip

Instead of buying it online, I chose to find a store nearby that sold the Caboodle. Fortunately, the Ulta near our house sold it in their store (Oh Happy Day). So, the next day, my mother and I quickly hopped in the car and drove to Ulta. I was delighted to see the Caboodle case there in a variety of colors. I chose the teal and lavender option for Noelle’s gift. It didn’t cost no more than $20. So, I was well within our budget with money to spare.

Our next two stops were the dollar store and a different beauty supply store. We chose not to buy accessories at Ulta because we needed to purchase additional components to put in the case at an affordable price. Thankfully, we were able to find some adorable hair items and sunglasses at both stores to add to her new Caboodle case.

When we returned home we removed all of the items from their bags and started placing them into the case. It was truly exciting to see it all come together. Everything fit inside the case wonderfully.

The Result

After the Caboodle was assembled, we placed the entire case inside of the clear decorative gift bag that we purchased at Target and tied it with fancy ribbons. We couldn’t wait to present it to Noelle on her birthday the next day.

The day of Noelle’s birthday celebration, we presented her with our gift and she absolutely loved it. Even though she was only two, she knew exactly what it was and immediately starting looking at all of her new hair items. Plus, I think she was tickled pink that she had her own hair box that she didn’t have to share with her older sister.

I’m so happy that I came up with this cool gift idea. It was a great purchase and I know my niece still uses and cherishes it till this very day.

Every Mother’s Day, my brothers and I try very hard to make my Mom feel special.  We buy her gifts, take her out, spend time with her, and make her favorite foods.  We just love making her feel appreciated. Of course, we always want to do something different each year.  So for Mother’s Day 2004, I hosted a tea party at our home.

My inspiration for the tea party came from two sources.  First, my mother has a nice little teapot collection.  Her collection is a mixture of floral, traditional, and Asian.  She uses them periodically throughout the year when she is in the mood for tea or has company over.  So I thought the tea party would give her a chance to share her love for tea and teapots with family and friends.

TEA PARTY 2

AUNT JEAN

My second source of inspiration came from a story told to me by my Mom.  Apparently, my mother’s godmother, Aunt Jean, had a vast teacup collection in her china cabinet.  Aunt Jean’s collection expanded over the years due to a tradition carried on by her own mother.  According to the story, Aunt Jean’s mother would purchase her a new teacup every year as a gift to add to her collection until she had a complete set. Although Aunt Jean had a beautiful collection, she never used them.  Aunt Jean always wanted to host a tea party, but due to work, children, and other life events she never had the opportunity to use her teacup collection.  Not to mention, she had three sons and no daughters to share the tradition with.  My mother was the closest thing she had to a daughter.  Therefore, she shared the story with my mom.  Who in turn, shared it with me.

About a month before Aunt Jean passed away, she had purchased me a lovely rose covered teacup.  Even though it wasn’t my style, I loved the sentiment behind the gift.  I also felt special because she decided to continue the tradition with me since she didn’t have a daughter to pass it on to.  Of course, this was to my mother’s dismay because she was the one into teacups and pots.

My mother gave me the cup and shared the story behind the gift with me on my birthday.  I called and thanked Aunt Jean for the wonderful gift and told her I would definitely use it.  After I received the gift, Aunt Jean made my mother promise that she would complete my collection.  My mother fulfilled her request a few months later and purchased the rest of the collection for me as a Christmas gift.

A few months later, I was trying to figure out what to do for Mother’s Day.  After cycling through several ideas, I finally came up with the tea party idea.  I thought it was tragic that Aunt Jean passed away without ever using her teacups.  I didn’t want my mother having the same regret.  So I thought a tea party would be a great way to use her teapot collection and honor Aunt Jean as well.

Initially,  I wanted it to be a surprise party.  Unfortunately, it is difficult to plan a surprise party when you live in the same house with the person you are trying to surprise.  Ultimately, I decided to let Mom in on the tea party plans.  It actually worked out better that way because it gave her something to look forward to and kept her busy with planning.  Also, it was a great mother/daughter bonding moment.  So it was a win/win situation for the both of us.

The planning process was fairly easy.  First, we decided to have the party the day before Mother’s Day in order to give everyone the opportunity to come enjoy the tea party, but still spend Mother’s Day with their own family and friends.  Then, we wrote out our guest list and sent out invitations.  Everyone on our guest list was eager to attend the party because they had never been to a tea party.  So we had plenty of people to entertain the day of the event.

The next part of the planning process was to come up with a menu that was fitting for a tea party.  We had finger foods like cucumber sandwiches, fruit, tea cookies, etc…  Additionally, since no two teapots in Mom’s collection are alike, we decided to set up different vignettes for each type of teapot. We also decided to have different types of tea in each teapot in order to have a variety of flavors for guests to try.

On the day of the tea party, things went as planned.  Some of our guests brought their own moms to participate in the festivities. In honor of the moms that were no longer with us, pictures were shared in their memory.  My brothers contributed to the event by being helpful throughout the day.  They helped set up all of the tables and chairs, greeted guests, and made sure they were available whenever we needed them.

TEA PARTY 4

VIGNETTE 3

At the end of the tea party, we gave guests a cute party bag filled with items that my mother loved from her childhood.  The items ranged from a set of jacks to old school candy.  Overall, the tea party was a success and everyone had a nice time.  I definitely would suggest having a tea party for your next Spring event.  It’s a unique way to spend time with family and friends.

Each year I pride myself on the fact that I’m able to come up with something new and different to present to a family member. Christmas 2015 was no exception. The Man Can idea came about because I was searching for a unique gift to give to my baby brother Kahlil for Christmas. I did not want to disappoint my brother this year by giving him a generic gift.  So I searched high and low for gift ideas specifically geared towards men.  In my search, I stumbled upon quite a few websites that had uncommon gifts for both men and women. When the Man Can idea popped up on my screen, I knew it was the one I wanted to create for Kahlil.

I loved the Man Can idea immediately.  I even found a few websites where I could purchase one as a gift.  However, I really wanted to personalize it for my brother and his tastes.  So I decided to scour the internet to find variations of the Man Can gift.  Many of the sites offered the same items from cologne to soap.  Even though the cans looked really nice, I wasn’t sure if my brother would like the smell of the items that were placed in the can.

So after spending a lot of time researching the idea, I decided to create my own version of the Man Can. The idea seemed simple enough. I just needed to purchase a paint can and place some thoughtful items inside.  I know my brother pretty well, so this wouldn’t be a hard gift to create. Easy peasy.

First, I ventured out to the hardware store to purchase a paint can.  Places like Home Depot and Lowes have an entire paint section where you can find a paint can to fulfill your needs.  I also made sure I bought a paint can opener to tape to the top for my brother to use when he opened his gift.

Next, I had to figure out what to put inside of the can.  I decided to visit Bath and Body Works in order to purchase a few quality products that were made for men.  After smelling what seemed like hundreds of scents, I settled on body spray, cologne, body wash, shaving cream, hand cream, and hand sanitizer.  To round off the gift, I added dude wipes and a bottle of deodorant geared towards a man’s private area.

After gathering all of the components, I had to put everything together.  I designed my own labels for the front and back of the can.  I based the label on the design I saw for the original idea on the Plumb Island Soap Company website.  I made sure I put manly descriptions of each item on the back and a cool logo on the front.  It took me awhile to get the size and color just right, but in the end, it was worth it.  I carefully added all of the items to the can.  It wasn’t easy because I had quite a few items to place in a small container, but somehow I made it work.  Finally, I topped it off with a bow.

When I presented the gift to my brother, he was completely surprised.  He loved it. Every item that I chose for the gift was perfect. I’m glad that I decided to personalize the can versus purchasing one that was pre-made. It made it special and customized just for him. After coming up with such a cool gift, I don’t know what I’m going to create next year to top it.
