It’s been a while since I’ve made a Pen Pal With Me post, but I’m finally at a place where I can send a few letters to my close family and friends. The recipients of these letters are my Cousin Kola and my bestie Kendra. They are both very special to me and I really wanted to send them some pretty happy mail.

After a lot of thought, I finally settled on a few themes for my letters. It took me a while, but I was able to come up with two very different designs that stretched my creative skills. I decided to wait til my spring break to design my snail mail in order to give myself time to make something unique for the two of them.

The Design Process

Kendra’s Letter

For Kendra’s letter, I was going for a vintage vibe. My initial idea was to use the craft paper envelope as a background for vintage stickers, washi tape, and scrapbook paper. However, as I started going through my stash, I quickly realized that I didn’t really have a lot vintage supplies to go with my theme. Therefore, I had to come up with another idea that fit with the supplies I had to work with.

It took a long time for me to land on a different idea, but I finally stumbled upon some washi tape that was the foundation for my design. Ultimately, I decided to do something very classy and glam based on the colors gold and black.

Envelope Art

For the envelope, I created a grid pattern using the washi tape. I based this design on a video by Cat’s Planner on YouTube. Once complete, the pattern turned out to be a wonderful backdrop for the black and gold stickers I used to embellish the envelope. The addition of the flowers, hearts, and phrase really made the design pop.

The Inside Pocket

The pocket was simple to create. First, I measured and cut the black backing to fit the size of the envelope. Second, I made the pocket out of a gold metallic patterned cardstock that I had in my collection. I affixed it to the backing using my tape gun, pressing it down firmly to ensure that it stayed in place. Finally, I decorated the pocket with black and gold stickers for a polished final touch.

Kola’s Letter

The theme for the second letter was spring flowers. This letter was much easier to complete because I had all of the supplies necessary to create this design (I have flowers of all shapes, sizes, and colors coming out of my ears). I was able to easily decide on a floral pattern scheme based on the washi tape that I used for this project.

The Envelope

I used the same grid pattern on Kola’s envelope that I created on Kendra’s. It turned out just as pretty as the first design. However, it had a different vibe because of the floral pattern. After I finished the grid, I decorated the rest of the envelope with white flowers and a blank pink and blue area to add her name.

The Inside Pocket

The pocket for Kola’s letter was fairly simple to make. I used the same process to create the envelope using pink cardstock for the backing and a floral patterned piece of paper for the pocket area. Since the pattern on the pocket was a bit busy, I chose not to add any additional embellishments to the pocket.

Note: I was a little nervous to add the crafty materials to Kendra’s letter because those items aren’t really something she uses often. However, in the end, I thought it would be a cute idea to send them anyway. I wanted her to have the full experience of what it’s like to receive one of my letters full of goodies. Hopefully, she can use the items to create other pen pal letters or find other craft projects that could use some fun decorations.

Final Thoughts

Although it took me a while to create these letters (3 days to be exact), I truly adored how each letter turned out in the end. Kendra’s letter looked retro and classy, while Kola’s letter looked soft and feminine. I can’t wait for them to receive their letters and get their reactions.

For the month of May, I continued to use the floral theme in my planner.  As usual, I used washi tape, card stock paper, stickers, and pictures from my HP Sprocket to create the layout for each week.  My favorite pages are the monthly calendar overview and the sunflower design for the last week of May.

Check out the gallery below to see how each layout for the month of May.

MAY HAPPY PLANNER GALLERY

My design inspiration for the month of June was Black Music Month.  I had already decided that I was going to use this theme for June a couple of months in advance. I was bubbling with anticipation to design the layouts for both of my journals using this theme. I had a few ideas in mind but needed something eye-catching for the cover pages.

Fortunately, I saw a painting on the YouTube show Giants which inspired me to do the cover in my monthly journal.  I couldn’t find out the name of the artist or get a clear look at the painting, but the view I had from the show was enough for me to create my own version in my monthly journal. I loved the idea of using albums as her afro hairstyle.  It easily went with my groovy retro music theme for the month.  It made a cool statement and set the mood for the rest of the month in my journal.

The cover page in my wellness journal was inspired by pictures found on Pinterest.  I saved a bunch of artwork on my Pinterest account which led me to design the cover page in my wellness journal. The artwork smoothly fits into my retro cool music theme for the month. I love the way the guy is jamming to his music and is in his own world.

The final design is very creative in my humble opinion.  I have illustrations of albums, sound waves, cassette tapes,  a walkman, a boom box, old school radios, and music notes on various pages of my journals.  The overall effect is very retro cool to me.  I absolutely love music and each page represents all of the ways I have encountered music in my lifetime.

WELLNESS JOURNAL DESIGNS

Coming up with a theme for the month of May was a difficult task to say the least.  I wasn’t inspired at all to design my journals until the very last minute.  I scoured the internet, Pinterest, and YouTube until I finally found some inspiration. After hours of looking, the retro theme was placed on my heart for the month of May.  To be specific, the theme is called Mid Century Modern according to the history books.  It actually reminds me of the Jetsons cartoon I use to watch back in the day.  I used various retro patterns, drawings, washi tape, markers, pens, and color pencils to create the look in both journals this month. The cat is featured on the front cover for both journals.  I decided to name the cat Cosmic Kitty.  She may appear in future designs.  Keep an eye out for her.

As usual, each journal contain charts, trackers, and calendars that are used throughout the month in order to keep my life and wellness on track. Take a look at the gallery below in order to see each journal design in more detail.

WELLNESS JOURNAL DESIGN

March was a pretty quiet month.  Although I spend most of my days in the house due to my illness, this month turned out to be EXTRA SUBDUED.  However, I did get out a few times and collected a few March memories.

The themes in all of my journals and planners for the month of March were green, succulents, and cacti.  So each week in my planner represents the theme perfectly.  For the weeks that I didn’t do anything, I created a vision board spread or a random layout that went along with my theme.

My vision board spread represents all of the desires I have for the upcoming year.  I envision having a solid relationship with a good man.  I placed Chadwick Boseman there because he represents a well rounded good guy in my humble opinion.  The picture of the young lady represents the lush healthy hair I would like to have this year. To round out the rest of my board, I placed pictures and phrases that represent patience with self, home design, abundance, family, and travel.

Take a look at the photo gallery below to see all of the layouts for March in my Happy Planner.

MARCH HAPPY PLANNER GALLERY

For the month of March, I wanted to use the color green as the main color for the entire month.  However, I didn’t want to go with the usual St. Patrick’s Day set up.  So I decided to go with succulents and cacti as the main theme for both journals.

I researched pictures, paintings, drawings, and doodles of succulents and cacti on Google, Pinterest, and Youtube.  I found hundreds of examples that inspired me to design each page in my journals.  On pages that were not hand drawn, I used washi tape and stickers to complete my vision.

It took me several days to complete both journals, but in the end, it was worth it.  Both journals look great in my opinion.  They each have their own personality, but still keep with the theme. The final designs put a smile on my face everyday.

MONTHLY JOURNAL DESIGN

The month of February was a special month in my Happy Planner.  Not only was it Black History Month, but it was also the month Black Panther was released to the world.  Therefore, it provided me with a lot of inspiration and memories for my Happy Planner.

I decided to go with the traditional theme of hearts for each week.  So you will see hearts appear in each layout.  Additionally, since it was Black History Month, I incorporated historical Black figures into the various layouts.

All in all, I think February has some of my best work so far.  I really enjoyed memory keeping in my planner the entire month.
